(NewsNation) —  A pair of Raleigh, North Carolina, mayoral candidates aren’t letting politics get between their friendship — or their plans for a post-election basketball game.

Candidates Paul Fitts and Eugene Myrick laughed together while campaigning beside one another Tuesday. They’re two of the five contenders in the nonpartisan race to fill sitting mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin’s vacancy.

“We talk about our ideas,” Fitts said. “We don’t tear each other down. We don’t believe in that.”

Fitts and Myrick have done several town hall events together and maintain a friendly relationship despite vying for the same seat.

“Listen, the politics may be different, but we’re pretty cool,” Myrick said. “Once I beat him in the mayoral race, I’m gonna take him to the gym and school him in some 21.”

Fitts fired back, claiming to have an advantage on the court.

“The oddsmakers are already talking about that game of basketball between me and you, and I’m already up in the odds, by the way,” he said.
