(NewsNation) — It’s a busy travel week, as airports and major highways are packed with people getting to and from their Thanksgiving destinations.
The weather could affect some people’s plans, with heavy rain and wet snow expected in the northeast part of the country, including Boston. New York City is getting rainfall, while snow is predicted in Buffalo and parts of Vermont. Lake effect snow is expected in the Lake Ontario region and a blast of arctic air could impact travel in other places.
Travelers who spoke to NewsNation on Thursday said the Transportation Security Administration seemed prepared for the number of passengers coming their way. Faye Nichols said she is happy to be out of the hospital after being there since Feb. 25.
“I have a lot to be thankful for,” Nichols said.
There were more than 1,300 total delays into or out of the United States as of Thursday afternoon, according to FlightAware, and 53 cancellations.
Forecasters are keeping an eye out for potential problems when people return from their trips, both because of weather and the number of people trying to get back. States expected to get snow during Thanksgiving are Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, the National Weather Service said.
More than 3 million passengers are anticipated to be screened by the agency.
“The TSA is projecting record numbers of people flying through the airports on Sunday after Thanksgiving.” said Aixa Diaz, a spokesperson for AAA.
