Family asks for help finding hit-and-run driver that killed 15-year-old

BERNALILLO, N.M. (KRQE) – A family is asking for the public’s help after a truck struck and killed a 15-year-old boy in the morning on Friday in Bernalillo.

The family of Isaac Herrera said they were celebrating his birthday and Thanksgiving on Thursday, and Isaac had been walking home with friends who came to celebrate with him.

He and his sister were walking back home near Avenida Bernalillo after midnight when a red Dodge pickup truck came speeding toward them. They said it hit Herrera, sending him flying several feet before he landed in a nearby ditch. He died as a result of his injuries.

“I didn’t like, in the back of my mind, I guess I knew he wasn’t going to survive that, but I was just hoping that he was going to be okay, that he was going to answer me when I was calling him, and he didn’t,” said Libby Garcia, Isaac’s older sister who was with him when he was struck.

Herrera’s family described him as a loving and kind boy full of energy. He was a freshman at Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho. “Me and him were always so close, so he loved the fact that we were in school together,” said MaryLynn Herrera, Isaac’s other sister.

“If one of us were sick, and even not sick, just if I’d be laying in my room watching TV, he would constantly go in there, ‘Are you okay, auntie? You need anything,’” recalled Renee Gallegos, Herrera’s aunt.

The Bernalillo Police Department is asking for anyone with information on the crash to contact them.
