(NewsNation) — A shoplifter picked the least opportune time to steal from a Virginia Walmart on Sunday.

Notwithstanding up to 40 police cars in the parking lot, Hector D. Velazquez Maldonado, 32, attempted to conceal merchandise and leave the store.

Chesterfield County Police were present at the IronBridge Walmart in numbers for the annual “Shop with a Cop” event, where officers pick out presents with children.

“A member of the staff at Walmart came up to us and informed us they had a shoplifting in progress,” Chesterfield County Police Lt. James Lamb said in an interview with CBS 6.

“We had 30-40 marked patrol cars in the parking lot,” he added.

“When we found (Maldonado’s) vehicle, it was facing where our cars were parked, so he would have had to see them. It seems it just didn’t matter to him.”

According to police, he attempted to steal almost $1,400 of goods and is facing a felony charge of grand larceny.
