Man detained after round shot at Virginia church during service

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man has been taken into custody following a shooting at a Suffolk church on Sunday afternoon.

At approximately 12:15 p.m., Suffolk Emergency Communication Center received a call for gunshots fired in the 6300 block of Whaleyville Boulevard.

An initial investigation determined a man known to Divine Church of Deliverance and Transformation entered the building during service hours seeking out a staff member who was on the premises.

The man was carrying a firearm and shot one round in the direction of the staff member; however, the staff member was not injured.

The man was detained in the church by the congregation until Suffolk Police arrived. Upon arrival, officers took him into custody regarding the incident.

No other injuries were reported.

A neighbor who lives across the street heard the music from the service but wasn’t expecting to hear sirens.

“I was baffled,” said neighbor Thomas Eason.
