North Carolina woman’s okra plant possibly a new world record

NEWPORT, N.C. (WNCT) — For one Newport woman, what started as simply gardening turned into a quest to conquer a world record.

Vicki Swindell may be the new title holder of the world’s tallest okra plant. “Annie Okrey” is an okra plant that stands around 17 feet tall.

“My husband really likes okra, so I figured I’d try that,” Swindell said. “And when it got about 13 foot tall, I was on a ladder harvesting it, and a girlfriend of mine saw a picture, and she says, I think that’s getting close to a world record.”

Swindell said she planted it in April of 2024. She thinks it will get taller which has her worried about the powerlines.

“She’s leaning away from them. I don’t know of it. Nature just knew to do that and it’s been great,” Swindell said. “It’s amazing to see how much they grow. It’s been almost a foot a month at this point towards the end here of our season, so I’m very curious to see how far she’ll go.”
