Mom, kids helped from flooded home face struggles following Milton

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) – Moments from Hurricane Milton replay in Amber Henry’s head even when the sun is out and shining. The single mom and her four kids were trapped inside a flooded house during the storm.

An 8 On Your Side crew heard Henry calling for help while reporting on the hurricane in Lakeland. “I lay down and every time I close my eyes I see the events that transpired that night. I see transformers, I hear them, I see the water rising, I see me and my children literally drowning,” she describes.

Henry and her kids made it out of the house and to a storm shelter, with some assistance.

“You guys were not even supposed to be on that street. You guys were going somewhere else, so, for you guys to be there, you just felt like my angels and my call out for help,” Henry said.

The news team checked in with Henry more than a week after Milton. She’s working to get life back on track. According to the mom, the family is bouncing between loved one’s homes, their car is totaled and important documents are lost.

Despite the difficulties, Amber is thankful they’re safe and amazed by the community’s support.

“It has changed me as a person forever and it has changed my children, “said Henry, “it showed me that people are still genuine, and they still care.”
