Who sees snow for Thanksgiving?

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – After a bit of a break in the weather for the big travel day Wednesday, the weather will get a bit more complicated for Thanksgiving on Thursday.

Windy, but quieter for most thru midweek

Most of CNY is mainly dry tonight right through Wednesday, with the exception of a little lake effect east of Lake Ontario which may produce a coating to 2 or 3 inches of snow for places like the Tug Hill Plateau. It’s breezy Wednesday too.

Thankfully, most of the state and country won’t have any weather issues for the big travel day on Wednesday.

Rain, accumulating snow for some on Turkey Day

A storm is forecast to move across the Plains Wednesday and move just south of New York on Thanksgiving.

Temperatures in New York will be marginally cold for snow. What does that mean? For most people in lower elevations, including Syracuse, precipitation on Thursday will be primarily rain with some wet snow mixed in. Any snow accumulation should be an inch or less on grassy surfaces.

Higher elevations where it will be a bit colder, will see snow for Thursday (actually beginning late Wednesday night). Accumulation of snow in the higher elevations south of Syracuse will be in the 2-4″ range.

Outside of the higher elevations outlined above, travel for Thursday should be fine. Steadier precipitation will become lighter or end entirely late Thursday afternoon/Thursday evening.

Then comes significant lake snow developing Friday and continuing over the weekend for parts of CNY. Click here for more details.
