3 elementary school students hospitalized after eating ‘gummy edibles’

CHICAGO (WGN) — Three Kilmer Elementary School students are in the hospital after allegedly consuming “gummy edibles” in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood.

According to the Chicago Fire Department, emergency personnel were called to the 6900 block of North Greenview Avenue around 2 p.m., where three minors were all taken to Evanston’s St. Francis Hospital in good condition.

In a statement released Tuesday evening, Kilmer Elementary Principal Natalie Rodriguez said some students had eaten “an unknown substance in the form of gummy edibles.”

“Out of an abundance of caution, notifications were made to ensure these individuals received medical attention. Everyone is safe,” Rodriguez’s statement continues to read. “The parents of the impacted community members and the CPS Office of Safety and Security have been notified, and while I cannot provide further details for privacy reasons, I can share that we will be handling this matter in accordance with CPS policies.”

Parents who spoke to NewsNation affiliate WGN said they were unaware of what was happening when they went to pick up their children from school Tuesday afternoon.

“I’m terrified. I have a first grader. I don’t know what’s going on,” said Kelly Kee, a Kilmer student parent. “I’m happy my daughter is okay. That’s my baby! I feel sorry for the parents who are dealing with what they’re dealing with — I don’t know how this happened.”

Emergency personnel have yet to release the ages of the children taken to the hospital.
