(NewsNation) — Debris from an unidentified object shot down near Lake Huron in 2023 was recovered by Canadian authorities who say it was likely from a weather monitoring company.

The object was shot down by an American F-16 fighter jet in February of 2023, the third such incident to happen in a short period of time.

While much has been made about the possibility that unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs) are linked to aliens, a bigger concern at the time was national security.

One of the earlier objects spotted in the sky was believed to be a Chinese surveillance balloon and there were fears the UAP spotted over Lake Huron was sent by a foreign adversary.

The object was described as octagonal and officials at the time minimized security concerns but said the UAP could have interfered with air traffic.

A freedom of information request was filed by CTVNews to Canada’s Department of National Defense, revealing that weeks after official search efforts by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were suspended, a wreckage was located along the shores of the lake.

The recovered material included a module, according to the reports received by CTVNews. In an email received under the request, the module was said to be from a weather monitoring company and it was not completely certain that the debris was connected to the shot-down UAP.

The RCMP did not respond to additional questions from the news outlet, citing an ongoing investigation.
