Virginia election results 2024

(NewsNation) —  Virginia voters will head to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots in some pivotal races in the 2024 general election.

Presidential race in Virginia

Vice President Kamala Harris is projected to win Virginia.


US Senate race in Virginia

Sen. Tim Kaine is projected to retain his Senate seat.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, who is seeking a third term to maintain Virginia’s Senate seat for the Democrats, will face off against Republican challenger Hung Cao, a retired Navy captain.

US House race in Virginia

Republican JEn Kiggans is projected to continue to represent Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District.

Democrat Eugene Vindman is projected to win Virginia’s 7th House district.

At the U.S. House level, all five of Virginia’s congressional incumbents face challenges including Republican Rob Wittman (1st District). Wittman is facing Democrat and former American Civil Liberty Union attorney Leslie Mehta.

Republican Jen Kiggans (2nd District) is seeking a second term in what has been a swing district within the state and is set to face fellow Navy veteran Missy Cotter Smasal

In the 5th District, Virginia State Sen. John McGuire is hoping to keep the traditionally red district for the Republicans in his race against political newcomer Democrat Gloria Witt.

Statewide ballot measures in Virginia

Voters will also consider a proposed constitutional amendment that would change the language in the constitution that provides property tax exemptions for veterans and spouses. If approved, the wording in the amendment would say that a soldier died in the line of duty rather than being killed in action.

On Tuesday, 468 U.S. congressional seats (33 Senate seats and all 435 House seats) are up for election.

Polls close at 7 p.m. on Election Day. Virginia has 13 Electoral College votes and remained reliably Republican between the 1952 and 2004 presidential elections before shifting to the Democrats between 2008 and 2020. Biden defeated Trump in that election in the state by 10%.
