Utah election results 2024

(NewsNation) — Voters in Utah will cast their ballots Tuesday in some key races in the 2024 election.

Presidential race in Utah

Former President Donald Trump is projected to win Utah.

Republican Rep. John Curtis is projected to win the Senate seat previously held by Sen. Mitt Romney.

Utah Sen. Mitt Romney announced that he was not running for reelection last year, leaving his seat wide open

Republican Rep. John Curtis will square off against Democrat Caroline Gleich, an environmentalist who is the underdog in a deeply red state.

Utah has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1970, and voters in the state typically favor moderate Republicans, like Romney and Curtis, in statewide elections. Curtis is the longest-serving member of Utah’s House delegation.

The winner in November will succeed one of Washington’s most outspoken Republican critics of former President Donald Trump

Voters will also elect 4 candidates to serve in the House from each of the state’s congressional districts.

Curtis’ bid to replace Romney is leaving an empty seat in Utah’s 3rd Congressional District, which covers southern and eastern Utah and including the cities of Orem and Provo.

The spot is being fought for by Republican Mike Kennedy and Democrat Glenn Wright.

Kennedy, a physician and lawyer from Utah County, represents Utah Senate District 21. Wright is a veteran and served on the Summit County Council.

GOP Rep. Celeste Maloy, who is endorsed by Trump, is running to keep her seat in Utah’s 2nd Congressional District against Democrat Nathaniel Woodward, a family law attorney.

Both have tried to stand out as the more rural-friendly candidate while courting voters.

The 2nd District, which groups liberal Salt Lake City with conservative St. George and includes many rural western Utah towns, has not been represented by a Democrat since 2013.

Utah Republican Gov. Spencer Cox is also vying for reelection. While several individuals from smaller parties mounted a fight, his biggest opponent is Democratic state Rep. Brian King.

On Tuesday, 468 seats in the U.S. Congress (33 Senate seats and all 435 House seats) are up for election. These elections will determine who has control over the two branches of Congress, and ultimately, who sets the agenda for the next president’s term.

Utah has 6 Electoral College votes contributing to the presidential race. The presidential election winner must earn 270 Electoral College votes to assume office.

Early voting started on October 15 in many Utah counties, with timings and dates for each location varying.
