(NewsNation) — Mississippi voters headed to polls Tuesday to cast their ballots in some pivotal races in the 2024 general election.
Presidential race in Mississippi
Former President Donald Trump is projected to win Mississippi.
US Senate race in Mississippi
Sen. Roger Wicker is projected to retain his Senate seat.
In addition to casting ballots in the race for the White House between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, Mississippi residents will vote on several key offices, including in the race for the U.S. Senate where Republican incumbent Roger Wicker is looking to be re-elected.
Wicker has served in the Senate since 2007 and will face Democratic challenger Ty Pinkins, a civil rights attorney and retired U.S. Army officer and combat veteran.
US House race in Mississippi
In other national races, Democratic U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson is seeking a 16th term in Mississippi’s District 2 seat. Republican challenger Ron Eller is seeking to flip the seat after unsuccessfully running for the 2nd District nomination in 2022. He earned a spot on the ballot after winning a run-off election in the Mississippi primary.
Republican U.S. Rep. Trent Kelly faces Democrat Dianne Black in District 1. Fellow Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Ezell is seeking a second term representing District 4 and faces Democrat Craig Raybon.
Republican U.S. Rep. Michael Guest will also appear on the ballot representing Mississippi’s 3rd Congressional District but will run unopposed in the general election.
On Tuesday, 468 U.S. congressional seats (33 Senate seats and all 435 House seats) are up for election.
Polls close in Mississippi at 7 p.m. local time. The state holds six electoral votes in the presidential election.
Mississippi has been solidly Republican since 1980 after flipping to red after last voting for a Democratic presidential candidate in 1976. Every Republican candidate has garnered at least 50% of the vote in the state since 2000, including in 2020 when Trump defeated President Joe Biden in the state by nearly 17%.
