Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump each won one of Maine’s congressional districts, earning them one electoral vote each.

The remaining two electoral college votes were awarded to Harris, the state’s overall winner.

In the race for the U.S. Senate, independent incumbent Sen. Angus King is projected to win another term after he was elected in 2013. The former Maine governor is challenged by Republican Demi Kouzounas, who was elected as the Maine Republican chairperson in 2017.

US House races in Maine

Maine residents will also vote in several congressional races that could affect which party controls both chambers.

In Maine’s 1st Congressional District, incumbent Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree faces Republican Ron Russell and unenrolled candidate Ethan Alcorn.

Democratic incumbent Rep. Jared Golden overcame his challenge by Republican Austin Theriault to win another term in the 2nd District.

Maine uses a ranked-choice voting system for presidential and Senate elections, meaning that voters can choose between all candidates in order of preference regardless of political party.

Statewide ballot measures in Maine

Maine voters considered five ballot measures:

When it came to Question 5, Maine residents voted to retain their existing flag — blue with the state seal — instead of reverting back to the design of the state’s original flag, a simple pine tree and blue North Star.

On Tuesday, 468 U.S. congressional seats (33 Senate seats and all 435 House seats) are up for election.

Early voting in Maine began Oct. 6 and ended Oct. 31. Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. local time on Election Day.

Maine carries four Electoral College votes. Presidential candidates need 270 to be elected. The state has voted Democrat in the last eight presidential elections. In 2020, Joe Biden defeated former President Donald Trump by nine percentage points.
