US House races in Illinois
Voters will decide who occupies 17 House seats, 14 of which are held by incumbent Democrats running for reelection.
In the 17th District, Democratic incumbent Rep. Eric Sorensen is projected to defeat Republican challenger Joe McGraw.
McGraw, a former judge and prosecutor, has gained the support of national Republicans including House Speaker Mike Johnson.
In the 13th Congressional District, Rep. Nikki Budzinski, a Democrat, is seeking a second term against Republican Joshua Loyd, a U.S. Army veteran.
The district is in a part of Illinois that tends to vote Republican. Still, after the 13th District boundaries were redrawn in 2021, Democrat-leaning cities like Springfield, Champaign and Decatur could mean an easier fight for the incumbent.
Statewide ballot measures in Illinois
Statewide, Illinois residents will vote on three ballot advisory questions:
- Should candidates on the ballot face penalties if they interfere or attempt to interfere with an election worker’s duties?
- Should millionaires pay an extra 3% tax on income tax to create more funds for property tax relief?
- Should all insurance plans that provide coverage for pregnancy also cover all medically appropriate assisted reproductive treatments, including in vitro fertilization (IVF)?
On Tuesday, 468 seats in the U.S. Congress (33 Senate seats and all 435 House seats) are up for grabs. These elections will determine who has control over the two chambers of Congress, and ultimately, who sets the agenda for the next president’s term.
Early voting began in Illinois on Sept. 26. Polls on Election Day will open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. local time.
Illinois holds 19 electoral votes and has voted Democratic in each presidential election since 1988.
