(NewsNation) — Some media and fact-checking sites have discredited a lie that spread over social media following the election that Vice President Kamala Harris only won states that didn’t require voters to show identification at the polls.
“She didn’t actually win all of the states where photo ID is not required,” Lisa Bryant, chair of the political science department at California State University-Fresno, told the French news agency AFP.
“Thirty-six states have laws requesting or requiring voters to show some form of identification at the polls,” according to the National Conference of State Legislatures website. “The remaining 14 states and Washington, D.C., use other methods to verify the identity of voters,” it adds.
Fourteen states don’t ask for ID when people vote in person, and Harris won 12 of them. President-elect Donald Trump won the other two, Pennsylvania and Nevada. Harris also won seven states that require either a photo or no-photo ID to vote in person.
Some social media posts implied that ineligible people to vote took advantage in the states that don’t require ID and voted for Harris. Some of those posts were viewed several million times.
