(NewsNation) — Hawaiian woman Hannah Kobayashi, who has been the center of a search since going missing in Los Angeles in November, crossed into Mexico on foot, alone and seemingly unharmed, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Her case is now classified as one of a voluntary missing person.

Here’s a timeline retracing key moments in Kobayashi’s disappearance.

Hannah Kobayashi misses connecting flight

Nov. 8, 2024: On a trip from Hawaii to New York, Kobayashi misses her connecting flight at LAX.

She tells her family she will sleep at the airport that night, with many of her loved ones assuming she’s on standby for another plane to New York.

  • Hannah Kobayashi, 30, vanished 16 days ago while traveling to visit her aunt in New York, missing her Nov. 8 connecting flight. She was later seen in Los Angeles on Nov. 9 and 10, and her family last heard from her Nov. 11. That day, she was spotted at the airport and later at a train station, reportedly with an unknown person. Kobayashi also sent cryptic texts to friends and family and made two Venmo payments Nov. 9 — one with a bow-and-arrow emoji and another with the word "reading."

Hannah Kobayashi texts family; phone turns off

Nov. 11, 2024: The Monday after she missed her connecting flight, Hannah Kobayashi returned to LAX, according to a USA Today interview with Pidgeon. She told the outlet that Hannah Kobayashi spoke to an American Airlines agent between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m., but never boarded a flight.

That same day, Kobayashi sends her family “strange” and “alarming” texts.

One said: “I got hacked, stripped of my identity, I can’t fly.”

Another reads: “I got tricked pretty much into giving away my funds for someone I thought I loved. I’ve been on the streets.”

Pidgeon told NewsNation her niece’s phone has been off since the day those texts were sent.

“No one has heard from her. Not a single person has heard from her. And that is unlike Hannah. Hannah checks in,” Pidgeon explained.

Surveillance footage shows Hannah Kobayashi

Nov. 11, 2024: Family members say Hannah Kobayashi was spotted on surveillance video around 10 p.m. in downtown LA near the Pico Metro Station. That’s roughly a block away from the Crypto.com Arena and near LAX.

Pidgeon said the unreleased surveillance footage showed Hannah Kobayashi was not alone and that she did not look well in the video. Hannah Kobayashi was wearing the same clothing she had worn when she arrived from Maui.

Pidgeon told NewsNation that Hannah Kobayashi had “no reason” to visit the metro stop so late at night “unless she was misled, unless she was forced to or, unfortunately, now we’re thinking, unless she was drugged.”

It’s unknown when the surveillance video was shown to Hannah Kobayashi’s family, and it has not yet been released to the public.

Family files missing person report for Kobayashi

Nov. 12: Following the alarming texts, Hannah Kobayashi’s family files a formal missing persons report in California.

The LAPD Missing Persons Unit posts on social media about her disappearance.

Hannah Kobayashi’s father found dead near LAX

Nov. 24, 2024: Ryan Kobayashi, the father of missing woman Hannah Kobayashi, was found dead in a parking lot near Los Angeles International Airport around 4 a.m.

In a statement posted on Facebook by the RAD Movement, a nonprofit organization that works to find people, the organization confirmed the 58-year-old “tragically took his own life.” The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office and LAPD confirmed his identity.

The family said the loss has compounded their suffering “immeasurably.”

“What the family needs most in this difficult time is for all communities to rally around them with support, compassion, and prayers,” the statement said. “Please be considerate with your comments and posts. The trauma they are enduring is profound, and they now face the additional burden of grieving the loss of their family’s pillar and navigating next steps.”

LAPD: Hannah Kobayashi ‘intentionally’ missed flight

Nov. 26, 2024: On Tuesday, according to reporting from USA Today, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said the department determined she intentionally missed her flight to New York.

“Our hearts go out to the Kobayashi family during this unimaginable time of grief,” McDonnell said in a Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners meeting. “We remain fully committed to locating Hannah and supporting the family as they navigate their way through this tragedy.”

Family responds to LAPD investigation

Nov. 30, 2024: Kobayashi’s sister and mother released a statement on Facebook Saturday night, claiming investigators have reported inaccurate information on the case. They also allege the police department has not communicated new developments with them, sharing in part:

  • It does not appear that Hannah intentionally missed her flight.
  • My mother and I were unaware about the alleged findings presented at the Los Angeles Police Commission meeting until multiple videos of the meeting were sent to us by multiple citizens.
  • These alleged findings have yet to be relayed to my mother and I directly from the Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department or any detective involved in Hannah’s case.
  • My mother and I would later learn that the police commission is a five-member committee made up of five civilians, not law enforcement, who are not directly involved in Hannah’s missing persons case.
  • Specific facts contained in that report were inaccurate, such as Hannah’s age. Hannah is 30 years old, not 23. Also, Hannah was reported missing to Law Enforcement on November 11th, not November 13th, as stated by the chief of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The lack of communication surrounding some important details has left us feeling excluded from potentially crucial developments. However, we do remain hopeful and optimistic that the Los Angeles Police Department is doing everything in their power to assist us in locating Hannah

Hannah Kobayashi crossed into Mexico on foot: Police

Dec. 2, 2024: Authorities updated the public to let people know that Hannah Kobayashi went to Mexico.

Hannah Kobayashi was seen on security footage crossing the U.S. border, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

“We’ve basically done everything we can do at this point. She’s left the country and is in another nation now,” McDonnell said, adding that if she returns to the U.S., law enforcement will be notified.

McDonnell said Hannah Kobayashi has a right to her privacy but urged her to reach out to her family or law enforcement.

“A simple message could reassure those who care about her,” McDonnell said. He explained that the voluntary missing person case will remain active until her safety is confirmed by law enforcement.

Sydni Kobayashi, Hannah’s sister, says the family is skeptical of the police’s official story, though.

“I said this from day one, I feel like she is in danger. I feel like this is completely out of character for her. I’ve known her my entire life,” Sydni Kobayashi told NewsNation.

Hannah Kobayashi may have been victim of green card marriage scam

Dec. 6, 2024: The 30-year-old Maui woman may have been caught up in a green card fake marriage scam, which the FBI is investigating.

Recently, photos of what appears to be Kobayashi getting married have circulated on social media.

Los Angeles Magazine, citing unnamed sources, said Kobayashi may have been involved in a secret marriage plot for money. The magazine characterized the marriage as an immigration scheme where Hannah was tricked out of the money that she was supposed to receive.

“A Facebook user sent what looked like a Hawaiian beach wedding photo of Hannah with another man with leis around their necks wearing white, and they said that they learned off of Reddit that there was this sham marriage for money and that this is the wedding picture that’s being circulated on Reddit,” said Sara Azari, the Kobayashi family attorney, to NewsNation. “Of course, that came as a shock to Hannah’s sister.”

The Argentinian man believed to be involved was on the flight from Maui to LAX on Nov. 8, and so was Kobayashi’s ex-boyfriend.

Her mother and sister pushed back, saying police had released inaccurate information and were not updating them on developments.

They said they do not think Kobayashi intentionally missed her flight and believe she may have been a victim of a green card marriage scam after photos of what appeared to be a wedding between Kobayashi and an unknown man surfaced online.

Hannah Kobayashi’s aunt parts ways with rest of family

The aunt of missing woman Hannah Kobayashi announced she is parting ways with Kobayashi’s mother and sister in her effort to locate her niece.

Larie Pidgeon told NewsNation that she made the decision to part ways with her sister and daughter and said she saw no need to use funds raised by the family on a lawyer instead of a private investigator.

Pidgeon also said she is not associated with her sister’s GoFundMe account and never has been.

“My sole focus remains on finding Hannah and ensuring her safety and well-being. It has now been 25 days since anyone has heard from her, and I am determined to continue my search,” she said. “I am preparing to travel to Mexico personally to further the efforts to locate her and verify that she is acting of her own free will and is truly safe.”

When asked about Pidgeon’s statement, Sara Azari, the Kobayashi family attorney, to NewsNation implied Pidgeon was motivated by raising her profile as an influencer.
