(NewsNation) — Chris Cuomo joined Bill Maher for his eponymous show “Real Time with Bill Maher” on his weekly show Friday.
Cuomo, whose own eponymous show airs on NewsNation weeknights at 8 p.m. ET/7 CT, joined Maher alongside Dr. Casey Means and Fox News contributor Mary Katharine Ham for a panel discussion on Maher’s HBO show.
The quartet discussed the state of health in the United States, leaning on Means’s expertise in the space.
“There’s a lot of stuff in our food that probably shouldn’t be there. And every time they look, the more they look, the more they find that can kill you,” Cuomo said.
“Everybody’s head is going like this, ‘Yeah, the food’s a problem.’ My question to [Casey] is, if everybody’s head is nodding like this, what is keeping anything from ever happening that moves us in the direction?”
Maher argued the United States is culturally different from the likes of Italy and other nations with less processed and artificially enhanced foods.
“Over 20% of our GDP is dependent on us not talking about obesity honestly, 17% of our GDP goes to healthcare, and a huge portion more goes to ultra-processed food,” Means said.
“There is a chokehold on talking about anything that can make people feel empowered to not take part in that system, which depends on us being addicted to processed food.”
