Ohio man sentenced after shooting man over not sharing potato chips

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) — An Ohio man learned Monday he will spend several years behind bars after he was convicted of shooting a man in the face because he wouldn’t share his potato chips.

Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich announced Monday in a press release that Melvin Wright, 43, was sentenced to 9-12 years in prison for the crime.

Wright previously pleaded guilty and was convicted on several charges including attempted murder for the incident that happened on Nov. 28, 2023.

According to the release, Wright approached the victim inside a nightclub in Akron and asked for some of his chips. When the victim, who was not named, refused, Wright followed him to his car and shot him in the face.

The victim drove to the hospital where he received medical treatment for six days. He did survive.

“Summit County is safer without Melvin Wright on our streets,” Prosecutor Kolkovich was quoted in the press release. “Senseless violence has no place in Akron, and I am grateful that the survivor of this crime is continuing his courageous recovery. Thank you to my assistant prosecutors and the Akron and Metro Transit police departments for their work in holding Wright accountable.”

Wright has also been designated as a Violent Offender, according to the release, so upon his release from prison, he must annually register as a Violent Offender for 10 years.
