Menendez brothers case ‘high priority’: New Los Angeles DA

  • Lyle and Erik Menendez currently serving life without parole
  • Previous DA George Gascón recommended resentencing for the pair
  • Gascón lost reelection to Nathan Hochman, who plans to assess case

(NewsNation) — Nathan Hochman, the newly elected Los Angeles County district attorney, tells “Banfield” the Menendez brothers’ resentencing recommendation will remain a top priority as he takes over the office from George Gascón.

“I owe it to the Menendez [brothers] as the victim, family members, the public, to as expeditiously as possible review and do a thorough review of the facts in the law,” Hochman said.

Hochman, who previously told NewsNation he believed Gascon’s resentencing recommendation was a “political” move, echoed his statements Friday.

He pointed to the proximity of the election and Gascón’s decision to recommend resentencing, adding that his evaluation will be free from potential political influence.

“The Menendezes deserve a D.A. actually doing their job so that there’s no cloud of credibility over a decision,” he said.

Erik and Lyle Menendez’s resentencing hearing has been set for Dec. 11, when a judge will decide whether they will have a shot at freedom after spending 34 years behind bars for the shotgun killings of their parents in 1989 at their Beverly Hills home.
