NEW YORK (WJW) — The ninth Powerball jackpot of the year has been won after a single ticket, sold in New York, matched all six winning numbers on Saturday.
According to Powerball, the winning ticket — which had numbers 1, 31, 43, 55, 57, and Powerball 22 — secured New York’s first Powerball jackpot since 2020 and the state’s 13th overall victorious ticket.
The lucky ticketholder will have the choice between an annuitized prize of $256 million or a lump sum payment of $123.5 million. Both prize options are before taxes.
Nationwide, 568,978 tickets won prizes in Saturday’s Powerball drawing, including 12 tickets that won $50,000 prizes by matching four of the five white balls and the red Powerball.
Saturday’s jackpot was the fourth-largest Powerball prize of the year:
- April 6: $1.326 billion, Oregon
- Jan. 1: $842.4 million, Michigan
- Oct. 23: $478.2 million, Georgia
- Dec. 7: $256 million, New York
- June 10: $226.6 million, New Jersey
- May 6: $214.9 million, Florida
- Aug. 12: $213.8 million, Pennsylvania
- July 3: $139.3 million, Ohio
- Aug. 19: $44.3 million, California
The largest, a $1.326 billion prize, was won in Oregon by a man diagnosed with cancer. He told reporters he would share the funds with his wife and a friend.
Powerball has only recorded nine jackpots in a single year once, in 2018, game officials said.
Powerball tickets are $2 a play, and drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10: 59 p.m. ET. While the game’s jackpot will now reset to $20 million, a massive $619 million Mega Millions jackpot is currently brewing. The next drawing for that game is Tuesday at 11 p.m. ET.
