McALLEN, Texas (Border Report) — A Laredo man has been arrested and charged with murder in the 2023 shooting death of a retired Border Patrol agent, according to law enforcement.
Luis Angel Jaimes, 23, is accused of killing retired Border Patrol Agent Rodolfo Pequeño Jr., on May 29, 2023.
According to Webb County Jail records, Jaimes was arrested Monday and released on Tuesday on a $100,000 bond.
This isn’t the first time that Jaimes has been arrested in connection with Pequeño’s death. The Laredo Morning Times reports that he was among five other men and a woman arrested in December 2023.
Jaimes was arrested and charged with deadly conduct and discharging a firearm on Dec. 21, 2023, according to jail records. He was released that same day on a $30,000 bond.
Pequeño, 66, was born and raised in Del Rio, Texas, according to his obituary. He served over 23 years in the Border Patrol’s Laredo Sector and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
According to reports, Pequeño was shot in the head on Memorial Day 2023, as he left his ranch northwest of Laredo.
According to court documents, several of the individuals previously arrested had numerous firearms in a vehicle found near where Pequeño was killed. The newspaper reports that an investigation revealed several in the group had been shooting in a nearby area inside an open field near where the retired agent traveled to get to his ranch.
Investigators said the intended target did not have a clear backstop, thus allowing shots fired to proceed to the adjacent property, according to court documents.
