(NewsNation) — Vice President Kamala Harris promised to do “everything in her power” to end the war in Gaza if she is elected president as part of her last-minute efforts to reach swing state voters before Election Day.
Harris made the promise during a rally at Michigan State University on Sunday, noting that leaders from the state’s large Arab American community were in attendance at the rally, her last in Michigan ahead of the election.
The war in Gaza and the Biden administration’s support of Israel has been a source of disagreement within the Democratic Party.
Following the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas that sparked the conflict, which has now continued for more than a year, President Joe Biden stated strong support for Israel, saying the country has a right to defend itself.
As the war has continued, however, Biden has increased calls for Israel to do more to minimize civilian casualties and urged more aid for Gaza as the U.S. tries to keep the war from spiraling into a larger regional conflict.
A wave of pro-Palestine protests swept across college campuses in late spring, many resulting in conflicts with police sent to break up the gatherings. MSU was among those universities, with students calling for an end to U.S. involvement in the war and the school’s divestment from Israel.
During the presidential primary, there was a movement among Michigan voters to vote “uncommitted” in protest of Biden’s support of Israel. The movement did not endorse Harris when she took over the nomination.
At the rally, Harris said she would do everything she could to end the war, ensure Israel’s security and also ensure Palestinians have the right to dignity, freedom, security and self-determination.
Harris has also faced interruptions by protesters, including a small group outside Sunday’s rally.
One coalition of Arab American leaders known as the Abandon Harris campaign has endorsed Green Party candidate Jill Stein.
Both Harris and former President Donald Trump have picked up endorsements from Arab American leaders.
Trump also visited Michigan on Friday, heading to Dearborn, the largest Arab-majority city in the country, where he called for peace in the Middle East without offering specifics on how to achieve the goal.
The rally was Harris’ last planned stop in Michigan before she headed to Pennsylvania on Monday to wrap up her campaign.
